“An outstanding film!”
“So perfect and so honest.”
“Very good story with complex characters throughout. Heartbreaking, really, to witness the easy seduction of a teenager and her family.”
“So real with good metaphors. Rich for discussion.”
“Excellent movie! Very relatable, endearing, I could watch it over and over again.”
“Can we all be born again virgins?”
“Setting the film in 1962 was indeed significant, with the British invasion just around the corner, a turning point for England and for Jenny and indeed for women, especially in education. Wonderful character portrayals in a character driven film, the mother, the ditsy girlfriend, and Alfred Molina as the father was the right mix of caring and clueless.”
“Wonderful, yes, a true education. The scenes were magical and wonderful acting. A ‘movie movie’ as Judith Crist used to say.”
“Spot on portrayal of a young woman.”
“A sad movie a little spoiled by a fairy tale redemption. Nonetheless I liked the movie.”
“The ending was too contrived and too big a turn-around for Jen. Overall, a very good movie with an interesting display of an older man seducing a young schoolgirl. He was shameless! And the parents shallow and without strong values. Pitiful.”
“Moving, sensitive and insightful!”
“A marvelous movie with the simplest of messages – stay in school – but told so eloquently. Carey Mulligan is an incredible find, gorgeous, controlled acting, wonderful voice.”
“The trailers for this film were too extensive and sort of spoiled the film by giving a good portion of it away.”
“What a treat! Cleaver, smart, engrossing.”
“Refreshing. Excellent acting.”
“I loved it. This movie was perfect in every way: writing, directing, acting and editing. Even more powerful, it was the story of my life as a 16 year old in a conservative world dating a 24-year-old playboy in the 1960’s. At least he wasn’t married and I did go to college and regret nothing.”
“All that glitters is not gold. Perhaps, there is no purity - each character is flawed and therefore guilty.”
“Wonderful dialogue and acting!”
“Beautifully done!”
“Great acting! Still very relevant topics to us. Cautionary tale to the young and parents. Love Duffy!”
“Remarkably engaging despite many surprising turns. The film retains believability throughout, terrific performances.”
“Really a delightful surprise. Great casting for the film which really breaks stereotypes. Memorable line: ‘Being a great writer is not as good as knowing a great writer.’ Great music. Loved the film because it kept surprising, didn’t expect him to be married. I loved the glimpse of women at that time period. Touched some deep chords in women who grew up in the 60’s. Interesting take on attitudes about Jews.”
“Well-crafted film. Stunningly powerful. Great use of music. It brought out so many points about moral choices and consequences. Degrees of morality.”
“A wonderful film about a reprehensible subject. A married man, serial adulterer, lecher perfectly played by Peter Sarsgaard. In the 1960’s, the old joke was ‘women go to college to get their Mrs.’ All actors were marvelous, but why only 5 seconds of Sally Hawkins? The young woman, Jenny was absolutely complacent in her fate. Yet, I’m still happy there was a successful ending for her.”
“Education comes from more than books. Jenny was made of the ‘good stuff.’ I didn’t think it was necessary to specify David’s religion. (I am not Jewish).”
“Performances are great. Sargaard’s accent isn’t great, but plays the notes right as the creepy suitor. Molena is great. Mulligan knocks it out of the park. The ending is disappointing, but the journey is great. Sad, exciting and surprisingly funny with humor that came from well rounded characters.”
“Absorbing and well done film. Well acted.”
“I liked the way the plot unraveled. Interesting to see how easily it is to be seduced. There is a happy medium of being educated and living an interesting life.”
