“Wonderful subject. Didn’t take itself too seriously, and the storyline and acting was fluid. Chazz and crew had great timing. The movie is something from the heart combining both the love of do-wop with food and family. Very ‘feel good’ without being very preachy. Some holes in the movie, but it didn’t focus too much on ‘what ifs.’ and stayed focus on the band and how they stayed strong - and like Robert Davi’s line ‘Murphy’s law’ it proved the statement true. Crime doesn’t pay, but it’s a start of things to come.”
“So nice to see Robert Davi as a good guy for a change. Good first effort, but the script was amateurish for such a stellar cast. The music was wonderfully nostalgic…but used at odd places during the film. I wanted to hear more of Robert Davi and the Dukes sing! What a terrific voice. Mr. Davi was a great and forthcoming guest. I truly wanted to like the film more.”
“Great movie, the subject of an old-time singer was awesome.”
“Miriam Margolyes is always amazing! ‘Fools gold’ is actually pyrite, not a gold alloy. Fun Flick! Great to see a character in a wheel chair.”
“Very inspirational. If the Dukes can get back on top after 40 years then there’s still a chance for the rest of us too.”
“The most natural-looking acting was by Peter Bogdanovich and Frank D’Amico. The character of Aunt B seemed distancing from the others. She didn’t seem to blend with the other characters. There were moments of ‘stilted’ acting in scenes where Danny and George played off each other. In larger groups they became more real. Listening to Danny’s voice was a real highlight.”
“Delightful, uplifting and funny. Except for the heist. Dreams can come true.”
“So enjoyable! A lot of fun and laughs and I loved the musical score. What a great group of characters. Toe-tapping wonderful! Murphy’s law really ruled. Some might say it was corny and predictable, but I liked it despite that. The only criticism I would throw out - success through ill gotten gains even though no one got hurt and they didn’t realize much $ - speaks to thieves in our society today. Anyone who grew up listening to the music of the Doo Wop era will just love this movie.”
“Enjoyable. Light with a delightful theme that made my day. It’s good to laugh.”
“A funny, warm film with enough soul and pathos to melt the coldest heart. Unfortunately their dilemma is a too-true reflection of the times. In addition to their economic problems there was the overall question of how one reconciles a fulfilling past with the realities of aging. The acting was wonderful. It should be a success.”
“Davi the second best guest we’ve ever had (after Liev Schreiber).”
“What a blast from the past and present.”
“Well written, acted, and directed. A wonderful film that should have wide appeal.”
“Robert Davi was an amazing and personable guest, but that wasn’t enough to make this a good movie for me. I wanted it to be a lighter, more comic film. The soundtrack included a kazoo after all! But it was burdened by a darkness of cinematography and mood. The despair of the characters overwhelmed the thrill of the heist and the Doo Wop Café.”
“It is hard to believe that 4 men who were once ‘famous’ and had to deal with agents, promoters and large audiences could be so clueless! An unbelievable and annoying film.”
“Great music. Predictable with feel good ending.”
“A fun sweet film.”
“Heartfelt story and fun to see the acting.”
“Boring film. Highly interesting guest and interview.”
“Great nostalgia with a bunch of likeable guys and terrific music. The hope of one generation that its music will be discovered by another. Doo wop lives on.”
“Perhaps not have been a movie masterpiece, but it’s also wonderfully unpretentious, sincere and a great 90 minute journey down memory lane. “
“’The Dukes’ hits the mark not only from nostalgia, but in fine, striped-down storytelling. Put a bunch of likeable but clueless guys in money trouble, let them comically bumble around for a while, and provide redemption by discovering that family and friends and a little carpentry succeed where crime can’t. Wonderful performances, nice story, and – like doo-wop music – uncomplicated but full of emotion.”
“Another wonderful guest! Charming, intelligent and a lovely sense of humor.”
“I grew up in Brooklyn and I do remember Doo Wop. I was bored terribly. Q & A very interesting.”
“I wish I would have liked it more. It seems fragmented.”
“Disappointing. ”
“Great film and great guest.”
“Too many things went wrong for the characters I really didn’t care about. Why not get real jobs?”
“The hardest thing to do is to keep the promise.”
“Delightful comedy about a group of bunglers who finally almost get it right. Light and entertaining. Characters become very likable and I found myself rooting for them!”
“It was nostalgic and fun and sometimes moving. I would like to have heard more Doo-Wop. Even though I realized the film was working up to a climax of singing I think more do-wop would have enhanced the overall entertainment value. Perhaps something like ‘MAMA MIA’ in music. Maybe another time.”
“Loved it! A real adult film with heart.”
