| THE MESSENGER | Date: October 24 , 2009
“The painful job of notifying ‘NOK’ is one we rarely think of…and one of the most important. The ‘rules’ are almost as cold and cruel as the task itself, but the character of Will breaks the rules beautifully. This is a tender, gently paced film and one everyone should see. At first I thought, ‘oh no, another war movie’ but ultimately glad it wasn’t.”

“An incredibly moving film with a compelling story and fabulous acting. That people in the later part of the 20th century could still be imposing racial superiority ideas and treating fellow humans as less than human. There are so many scenes in this film that will stay with me, but I will sum them up in one scene where the mother had to hold up various dresses for her child to choose from because she was not allowed in the store.”

| AN EDUCATION | Screening Date: October 3 , 2009
“Setting the film in 1962 was indeed significant, with the British invasion just around the corner, a turning point for England and for Jenny and indeed for women, especially in education. Wonderful character portrayals in a character driven film, the mother, the ditsy girlfriend, and Alfred Molina as the father was the right mix of caring and clueless.” | |||||||||||
| PETER AND VANDY | Screening Date: September 26, 2009
“This film shows us a true depiction of a relationship. How it develops and slowly falls apart. The way the couple criticize and get on each other’s nerves is so true to life. At times it was depressing, but well written and acted. I felt like I knew this couple personally.”

“I’m prejudiced… I arrived anticipating another wonderful Jane Campion film and was not disappointed. This was a wonderful, literate, beautifully photographed film. It was a film that (as Campion always does) paid attention to every detail and analogies. The symbolism of the lake to appreciating poetry will stay with me for a long time. Great way to open the season. Great guest too.” |
