“Beautifully handled Munro short story, great casting and such a surprising choice in Kristin Wiig - she was such a good choice. I loved the unfolding of the character. When Kristin is kissing the mirror I kept fearing that she would be walked in on, since so many scenes occur with people walking in on others. Exquisitely painful. I love the line: ‘I have what I want.’ Says so much about her journey.”
“A gathering sense of shame and embarrassment through almost half this film develops an edge tension that leaves most horror films in the dust. Great cast and direction, only flaw comes at the end it wraps up too neatly, every character is smiling.”
“So we’ve had two movies in a row where Guy Pearce hooks up with the younger woman who comes to his house. The two stories are night and day, and I have HATESHIP for last week’s and LOVESHIP for this one.”
“John – another great discussion, thanks to Liza, she was wonderful! One question – did Alice Munro see the film?”
“Contrived, unconvincing slice-of-life drama.”
“There are elements of Wiig’s performance from BRIDESMAIDS here, but she really does a terrific job. SNL fans will be more than pleased.”
“Avoids all the pitfalls of such a story - sentimentality and predictability. Film takes a surprise turn when I thought she would be at the motel for two embarrassing minutes, but she shows her quiet determination.”
“Such a pleasant surprise that all these lost souls finally get it together!”
“Fabulous! I loved it! Unusual and great characters! Great story. Thank You!”
“”Talk about looking for love in all the wrong places, but she was forceful enough to correct the wrongs. Bravo!”
“Terrific director discussion! Thanks!”
“To start the film with a dead lady I was thinking to myself not another depressing film. But became engaged when she was on the bus. A lovely slice of life film with psychological depth. Kristin Wiig gives a moving, understated performance. The ensemble was great. Acting with meaningful expressions shows how much wanting to be needed and wanting to be connected are strong motives. The script brought this out in a realistic and non-saccharin way.”
“Great cast. Joanna’s strong performance with strength and humor.”
“Embarrassing to watch in the beginning, but very satisfying in the end. Everyone is looking for love.”
“Kristin Wiig is perfect, ‘understated’ says it all, but her last line and smile are as powerful as any I can remember.”
“Went with the film, acting, cinematography, etc. and enjoyed the story. Got involved with the characters. The pain was so real.”
“Good film, good acting. Not plausible that Guy Pierce’s character would have recovered so quickly. Nick Nolte came close to stealing the show.”
“This is what an independent film can and should be, an unconventional but meaningful story, handled in a refreshing, original and unpretentious way, with actors willing to work at what they love doing and a director who shows every indication of being a talented future filmmaker.”
