Student Video Essay Contest
Media Educators Association
is pleased to announce plans for a
Student Video Essay Contest
What is a student Video Essay?
Quote from Filmmaker Magazine:
“We can all agree that a video essay is a short online video that cuts together footage from one or more films in order to reveal new insights about them. But are there any ground rules?” As a relatively new media form, video essays have yet to conform to any structural guidelines, although they’ve been around long enough for define patterns to emerge: the supercut and the fan tribute, for example.
Countless books and essays have been written on film language and appreciation. Today the advent of social media combined with the greatly enhanced ease of use of video editing equipment has enabled the new field of video essays.
Thus, film appreciation has reached a point where social media is an outlet for creative film students. Instead of writing a 20-page paper on film aesthetics, appreciation or analysis, they can create an “essay” of a given film by creating a short YouTube (or similar platform) video that analyzes the film from various perspectives, using excerpts from the film, interviews with the filmmakers and comparisons to similar films.
