“Loved it. A sweet story that was beautifully touching with practically no dialogue. An interesting story.”
“Why?”
“I wanted to like this film but alas…Very French and interesting presentation of changing world of the 1950’s. Like THE ENTERTAINER much here deals with changing world of entertainment.”
“French nostalgia for the world of live entertainment before TV. French typically face serious and sometimes dark themes like death reflection and pain. I did not expect a happy ending.”
“What a disappointment!”
“I wanted to like this film. I wish the girl had been given more of a personality. I wish the illusionist had ANY personality. Hard to do with no dialogue I grant you, but Chaplin and Keaton and even Tati himself did it pretty well. Mock Disney if you wish but they get it right.”
"A beautiful and touching tribute to Jacque Tati. I loved this film; it’s gentle pace, and poignant story. The animation was gorgeous and every frame was rich in visual detail.”
“Poor guy can’t catch a break. Everyone ripping him off, the worst is the girl. So slow! Story about the film is great. Sorry the film is not. The lowest point is when he lets the rabbit go.
“Sad and very boring. Animation and sound was beautiful.”
“I get where it’s going, but depressing. Starts very slow and doesn’t go far. I’m glad the artist was satisfied, but I wasn’t. It also hurt my eyes. TRIBLETS OF BELLVILLE was 10,000 times better.”
“I don’t like animation.”
“Brilliant, charming, sad and poignant. Not a Hollywood film, but not untypical of French films.”
“There’s no plot, no acting, no dialogue and no point. There is beautiful artwork, but so what?”
“A beautiful and engaging work of art drawing the emotions of sympathy to the characters.”
“Americans are too tied to Hollywood. This movie had subtleties and treats jaded/shallow or thrill-seeking movie goers may miss.”
“Exquisitely drawn story, but ultimately sad and way too drawn out (no pun intended) film…and too slow for a Saturday morning. But, nothing happened! And must I be reminded that there is no magic?”
“Having loved Jacque Tati’s films I appreciated the spirit of the movie. The plot is going to disappoint people and the ending is hard, but I so appreciated this film’s execution of Tati’s script and its poignancy. Thanks!”
“A poignant, but ultimately a sad feeling. Animation was fantastic. A labor of love – 6 years to make! I liked the allusions to THE RED SHOES and the real Jacque Tati TATICHEFF.”
“Great detail!”
“6 years…I understand beautiful artwork.”
“Gorgeous artwork and engaging piece – a bit slow, but certainly interesting.”
“Not as nearly as good as THE TRIPLETS. Excellent storytelling without dialogue, but did not care for the story. Quite depressing and unhopeful view of life.”
