"Midnight in Paris" was inspired - a visual and auditory treat - with a chance to get nominations for screenplay, costumes, score, art direction, cinematography, director, and best picture, and, at least in the Globes, best actor in a comedy."
"Paris never looked better. One of his best in years.”
“Owen Wilson takes on the Woody persona with his voice, attitude. Reminds me of many of his films – PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, SLEEPER as past and present and potential future intermix - moving from one time to another to get perspective. A love song to Paris and to the lost generation and to his own lost past. The opening reminds me of MANHATTAN. Does for Paris what MANHATTAN did for NY. Adrian Brody was delightful as Dali as was Allison Pill. As always the casting is spot on.”
“I recall something Ed Koch once said: In the good old days people longed for the good old days.”
“Tres, tres bon, c'est magnifiique! Even Owen Wilson is charming.”
“Right up there with ANNIE HALL and BROADWAY DANNY ROSE. Plenty of inside jokes for history/literature /music buffs, but also a terrific – and don’t tell anyone - intelligent comedy for your average moviegoer on date night in Des Moines.”
“Back to the future, Woody Allen at his best.”
“This was one of his best films. The scenery alone made it worthwhile to see!”
“I gotta confess I did not want this movie to end. Visually – stunning, I could watch it with the sound off. Script – intelligent and insightful, I could enjoy it with my eyes closed.”
“So good!”
“Delightful!”
“Good movie. I think it is based on an old Woody Allen comedy bit.”
“OK it’s pure Woody Allen, and some will form a line (at the box office) to sing his praises, while others will say it’s just Woody Allen and we’ve seen it many times before. But if anyone else had made this film they would be heralded as a great new director, and Woody is 70-something years old!!!!!!"
“One of our best movies for the year.”
“Wonderful!”
“Mr. Konigsberg is a master filmmaker, with a massive body of work, some brilliant, - and MIDNIGHT IN PARIS is among the best, and others not – YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER. But the same can be said of Shakespeare and Springstein. Good company."
“Very moving and extremely funny film!”
“This movie is a Monet painting. You drink in its beauty and don’t want it to end. Loved it!”
“Clever and funny, but too episodic.”
“Excellent, thoughtful, delicious comedy. The casting was inspired. The conceit of nostalgia is universal and the even bigger conceit of Woody Allen outing himself in the company of the greatest artists of the 20’s and the Belle Époque – that was glorious!”
“Thanks, John, for a fantastic finish to our season!”
