“What do you do when you are born into a lifestyle that is
not you? Sensitive, caring, touching fairly portrayed!”
“I liked the clarinet music!”
“What a thoughtful beautiful film. Heartbreaking, really
well paced and beautiful! Characters I really cared about,
even the husband shows some sensitivity to Meira’s
ultimate needs and welfare. The only thing I hated was the
quality of the image, too soft focus! A dingy color palette is one thing, but I wanted focus.”
“Paced like a French movie. Very well done. Great music.”
“Great film!”
“A window into a life style but not a convincing outcome.
Great clarinet playing.”
“Not to sounds like a broken record, but this is why I come
to MEA – a wonderful heartwarming film about real people
in real situations that explore these lives with candor and
sensitivity. No great shocks, and the best special effect was the gondola ride to the future.”
“MAD ADVENTURES OF RABBI JACOB it ain’t.Could this movie be more boring? Some people are more comfortable in prison than others.”
“Thoughtful film, never preachy, about people trapped in
their circumstances, relevant to many other cultures and
religions.”
“The last shot of Felix and Meira in the gondola reminds
me of THE GRADUATE when they’re seated at the back of the bus. Now what? What have we signed on to? Interesting juxtapositions of life choices. Some great moments getting a glimpse inside of the day to day of Hasidic life; the women, the loneliness of a woman’s day even with all those others around. The insert of the film clip of the black singer playing the guitar was shocking and fabulous. Very even handed in depiction of Hasidism and secular culture.”
“Poor Meira, caught like the mouse in a trap, born into a
society where she probably didn’t belong. Interesting that
in Judaism it is an honor to go to the Yeshiva and to discuss the torah, question the meaning (remember ‘If I were a rich man’?).”
“Loved this movie. I wanted to see them kiss in the worst
way and found the last shot so ominous, but it’s ok that the film deprived us of seeing their well consummation. Seeing the courage and complexity of their choice and the reality of that decision made the film all the more powerful.”
