“What a terrific film. An insider’s job on Branagh’s part, giving him an opportunity to work with his friends, real theatrical royalty and flesh out the bones of Shakespeare’s known biography. It becomes a wonderful vehicle for Branagh and Elton’s love and esteem of the profession of theater and the challenge of reentry to family life in his town, after a glorious life in London. And what a scene: the poetry slam with McClellan and Branagh!”
“There are a few anachronisms that were a bit jarring for the time period. Look of the film is beautiful. Stunning that the camera is on one spot doesn’t move like early film. Great scene with Ian McClellan.”
“If there are three greater actors than Branagh, Dench and McKellen let them come forward and proclaim themselves. They are worth the price of admission alone. But throw in gorgeous cinematography and a very prescient script and this is fun for everyone, not just Shakespeare scholars.”
“Absolutely brilliant. Setting-wise, concept-wise, acting-wise. The best thing I’ve seen all year! Kenneth you are unbelievable! Finally, a role Judi Dench deserves -one that shows how good an actor she is.”
“Despite the total irony and hutzpah of Branagh and Ben Elton giving this film the title ALL IS TRUE it’s true that it was fascinating, beautifully rendered and moving and a purely compelling story with timeless human resonance. OK, kinda like Shakespeare!” Thanks Jeanne K.
“Many parts of the script made me groan. Only part I liked were occasional quotes from the plays. This film was the worst film I have seen all year.”
“ALL IS TRUE is truly alright! This is a remarkable film on so many levels. It should be praised and seen for so many reasons. Kenneth Branagh’s film should be nominated for picture, directing, acting, screenplay and cinematography, editing, sound, score make up and set design. I have to admit I really liked it a lot.”
“Brilliant, Branagh does it again but ALL IS TRUE? A soap opera of Shakespeare’s life in poetry. Wonderfully acted. (what a great cast.) The writer, Ben Elton created a fantastic work masterfully weaving Shakespeare’s words into the script. Loved this! All is imagined very well! Cinematography was spectacular! Very clever. Loved the poetry smack down.”
“A beautiful, sad film with amazing photography, compelling acting. A glimpse into what we don’t know about Shakespeare.”
“Spectacular!”
“Often speculation about Shakespeare’s life is interesting. Not the movie. It’s not a movie for anyone who knows nothing about Shakespeare and his works.”
“One of the best films of this or any other year. Smart as it knows its Shakespeare, creative as it extrapolates from what is known to weave its own fable, and observational as it puts the brilliant bard back at home with mundane gossip, trivial small-town events and even smaller people. All is Perspective!”
“Two hours of grief extracted from a few scribbled lines. Scholars will know more. I recognized lines, but from which sonnet or play?”
“What a great story – Shakespeare – the greatest dramatist, playwright of all times, set in his own soap opera of small-town life, far from the big city and miles away from “Shakespeare In Love.”
“A biopic, I guess, as we watch one of if not THE greatest writer of all times now have to grapple with the mundane matters of small-town life instead of noble kingdoms, of self-important people instead of Kings and Queens, and a flower garden full of grubs. Absolutely wonderful.”
