“I love movies about horses, especially wild horses that have a
human connection such as BLACK STALLION and URBAN
COWBOY. Here we are set up to be concerned about the plight
of the wild mustangs and then it narrows into the prison
program which manifests the good that comes of inmates
having horses. I am still concerned about the plight of the wild
mustangs. It seems that humanitarian treatment of people and
animals is paramount in rehabilitation. Matthias was perfect as
Coleman Roman. Very, very moving film.”
“I enjoy all animal movies. I found this film to be very touching
and profound. The relationship between horse and trainer,
their development as partners and growth as individuals was
moving. I thought the acting was wonderful and subtle.”
“Thank you for this wonderful film.”
A French director and a Belgian actor. Really? They are both
wonderful, but is Hollywood too busy making Marvel comics to
understand how good motion pictures can be?”
“Revealing! Redemption! Bravo!”
“The opening credits were terribly upsetting, but really set up
the tone not only for the mustang’s situation but also for the prisoner’s situation. A very moving story and terrific
performances all around. Beautiful cinematography - not hard
to achieve in this beautiful western setting. An important
examination of the difference between penal institutions and
“corrections” institutions in thinking about jail.”
“Very powerful, painful to watch at times. The horse of course
is Roman’s inner self. The horse is locked inside as Roman is
inside himself.”
“Wonderful!”
“What a performance by Matthias Schoenaerts! We are sure to
hear from him again.”
“An engrossing story. Although I had an inkling what the end
would be. I felt engaged throughout. Emotionally satisfying.
So glad that I got to see this! We have seen other films about
how prisoners are used in programs to train dogs. Lots to think
about - control and relationship, the power of empathy and
redemption. Very different from THE RIDER.”
“Has a limited audience. Did not like the opening credits of
horses. Good real life program. Hope it continues.”
“Thank you, Sundance and Robert Redford, for producing this
eloquent examination of madness and redemption, courtesy of
a program that POTUS probably wants to cut if he hasn’t
already.”
“Man’s/woman’s best friend are our pets.”
“Well done but not new.”
We’ve all seen plenty of film’s about horses and their powers to
‘carry’ their riders, but this one avoids all the clichés, and that
not easy to do. It takes a woman to paint a great portrait of
men and violence and passion and redemption. Bravo.”
“Horses have been abused by mankind for most of their lives,
it’s good to see that a horse can be used for purposes other
than hard labor and battles.”
“Too many long dark pauses in movie.”
“Coleman’s spirit is broken, of course by what he did, but by
the judicial system as well. The horse’s spirit is free but gets
broken by the capture and then ‘breaking.’ Nice parallel, nice
film.”
“Prison isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but a program like this is
extraordinary.”
“Good entertaining film. Development is pretty predictable,
but very good acting by principle stars. Script is adequate, not
bad.”
“Amazing the power that animals have, amazing the power that
horses have in mankind’s history (especially wars), amazing the
position that horses have played in arts and culture and film,
from Equus to War Horse to The Horse Whisperer to Black
Stallion to Flicka and that’s just a few I can remember off the
top of my head. And this one is among the best.”
